Lists, part 2

Got Anthems?
Where did the summer go? Last month I gave you several lists: the Super 15, 30 ways to write a great worship chorus, and 50 questions to ask when you are interviewing a church for a new position. This month, thanks to the generosity of Lois Bock, I'm pleased to reproduce Fred Bock's 101 Favorite Anthems. This list originally appeared in the now out-of-print book Creating Four-Part Harmony, which was co-written by Fred and Lois, and published in 1989 by Hope. Interestingly enough, when I told the folks at Pine Lake Music, who, like any full-service music dealer, can get these anthems for you, about the list, they checked, and, essentially 20 years later, only 3 are out of print (including Ralph Carmichael's The New 23rd...which should be in print). So...if you are still short a few anthems for this (or any) choir year, this list will be invaluable. In fact there is only one title on this list that I, at...ahem...my age, have neither done nor heard of. These are truly "standard repertoire." Enjoy.

Final Thoughts

Fred Bock has been gone, now, for about ten years. His contributions to the world of music ministry can't be underestimated. Here are two examples: If you are a composer, and receive the "standard" ten percent royalty from your publisher, or if you routinely use Hymns for the Family of God, you have Fred to thank. On a personal note, I knew first hand of Fred's wit and impeccable timing. Yet whenever I asked him a serious question, he did not hesitate to share whatever he knew. A true mentor, he did not consider his knowledge to be a "family secret." From one professional to another...I urge you to keep this in mind whenever you have an opportunity to be a mentor. Share what you know graciously, in the spirit that binds us all together in the calling we have accepted.

 Blessings.
